After working for a summer in a clothing store he decided to take advantage of his savings and open his own shop in 1971. He bought clothes, he converted them, and he resold them. His creativity, however, was not satisfied and so he began to design himself the pieces he wanted. As, he admitted, “Drawing pleased me more than anything else. I knew from the beginning that the fashion design would be my life. ” Despite his passion, his business went bankrupt in 1977. He didn’t give up again. He attended courses on the commercial fashion section and, in 1979, he founded his own company, Tommy Hill. He slowly expanded into women’s fashion and various luxury items, such as perfumes, and spent time in India to learn even more about trade.

His relationship with music is special and his collections are often influenced by the music industry. A distinctive example is his collaboration with the R&B singer Aaliyah in the 1990s. Generally, hip hop style is incorporated into his designs and when Snoop Dogg wore a sweatshirt of his brand he sold out within a few days.
