Festival de Cannes

The 76th annual Cannes Film Festival kicked off on May 16, gathering a host of seventh-art artists on the Croisette.
Although at this year’s Cannes 6 women are claiming the Palme d’Or for the first time (a record number in the history of the festival), this year’s program does not lack “legendary” directors, traditionally associated with Cannes. Wim Wenders, Pedro Almodóvar, Ken Loach, Martin Scorsese and Aki Kaurismäki seem to represent this “old guard”, creators giving the 76th edition of the film festival a nostalgic air.As already announced, the Cannes Film Festival will open with the screening of Maiwenn’s Jeanne du Barry starring Johnny Depp. The committee is chaired by Swedish director Ruben Östlund, who has won the Palme d’Or twice with The Square and Triangle of Sadness shot in Chiliadou, Evia.

The Festival announced that this year an honorary Palme d’Or will be awarded to Michael Douglas in recognition of his “illustrious career and dedication to cinema”. As he stated, “The Cannes Film Festival always reminds me that the magic of cinema is not only in what we see on the screen but also in its ability to move people around the world. After more than 50 years of career, it is an honor to return to the Croisette to open the Festival and to speak our common language, that of cinema”.
